Music

Our rich tradition of English and American hymnody is central to our worship of God each Sunday. At South Church we are also eager to explore music from Christians around the world.

South Church in past years has hosted the New England Convention of Sacred Harp Singers, an annual event dedicated to the earliest American hymnal, and and last July we hosted the Vermont youth choir Village Harmony. We also have one of two Indonesian gamelan orchestras in the area.

Often in our weekly services we sing a hymn or prayer response from another corner of the globe.

Our interest in world music was piqued when we were visited by Michael Hawn in 2002. Michael has traveled the world collecting Christian music and is a professor at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.

Our choir and bell choir meet weekly to prepare music for the Sunday service, and the bell choir presents music in worship about once a month.
