What is arts ministry? Arts ministry is worship of God and spiritual growth as Christians through drama, music, writing, dance, and the visual arts. In worship at South Church you may witness skits performed by our youth or adults, dances performed by first-graders or a visiting ensemble, or a reading from the Psalms brought to life in sign language.

In the pews you may meet painters, cartoonists, composers, writers, theater directors, and dancers. We are eager to worship God in ways that are fresh and contemporary yet rooted in Christ and Christian tradition.

The altar area of our sanctuary was redesigned in the 1980s by a church member and Wesleyan theater professor who had a vision for bringing drama into worship. The adaptable space has hosted a trio of one-act musicals written by co-music director Neely Bruce: "Cousins," "Brothers and Sisters," and "Parents" were based on the stories of families in the New Testament with libretti written by Phyllis Bruce. They featured a cast of 42, dancers, Indonesian Gamelan, and a six-piece band.

A dance group entitled "Dancers of the Spirit" helps us deepen our worship experience, as well. The group lead a Sunday worship service in last year based around the theme of Jesus as "The Lord of the Dance."

Our annual Christmas Eve pageant is also an important piece in the liturgical cycle of South Church.

We are also members of Christians in the Visual Arts, a nationwide organization committed to the arts and Christianity.
